So, you’ve made your roman shades… and now it’s time to install them onto your window.
Watch this video to learn how to install a dust board onto your wall or window. If I can do it… ANYONE can do this.
TIP: You should temporarily install the dust board BEFORE you make your roman shades. Installing the dust board first will dictate the final measurements of your roman shade.
The most common way to hang your roman shade on your window is to attach it to a dust board.
A dust board is a 1″ x 3″ deep piece of wood cut to the finished width of your roman shade. You can get a thinner board at 1″ x 2″ deep or if you need the roman shade to extend past blinds or other window treatments, you can use a dust board as deep as you need… 4 inches or more.
This roman shade how to will explain how to install the dust board to your wall or window.
The installation is basically like a shelf.
You will need at least 2 L brackets. I recommend 3, and place the third in the center of the board to keep the board from swagging.
Now, if you are doing an inside mount… meaning you are going to install your roman shade to the inside of your window frame, you can simply screw the board directly to the inside frame… and skip these instructions all together.
But if you are going to hang the roman shade on the outside of your window… you’ll want to follow these instructions… and definitely watch the video!
Using a level, mark the wall where you want the top edge of your roman shade to be.
Now, lay the top edge of the board along these marks. Keep your level on top of the board to make sure you’re keeping the board level.
Mark along the bottom edge of the board.
Place your L brackets about 1″ from each side along that line and mark the holes. The holes should be BELOW the line. Also, make sure the placement of the brackets doesn’t interfere with a cord lock or mechanism that may be on your board later.
Using a drill, screws and possibly dry wall brackets, install the L brackets to the wall… creating a ledge to place the board.
Install the third L bracket in the center of the line.
When you’re ready… when the roman shade is attached to your board… place the board onto the brackets and screw the L brackets to the board. You may need a second person to help you hold the board in place.
